Scenster Magazine had some really nice things to say about Movement this year. Thanks! Here is an excerpt >
This year the lineup of talent had some of the biggest names in electronic music from many different genres. The festival still celebrated Detroit’s history as the birthplace of Techno by having a heavy stream of Techno’s big names, such as Carl Cox who headlined Saturday on the main stage, and Luciano and Loco Dice who headlined on the Sunday, but it also featured Benny Benassi and Bad Boy Bill catering to a more main stream crowd. The finale of the festival had two of the originators of Detroit Techno Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson who both received a hometown hero’s welcome as they closed the main stage.
The crew over @ China Shop did a great job of covering Movement 09′. They have a ton of great articles and picture galleries. Here’s a quick excerpt from an article entitled > “Movement: Why Detroit Matters”
In the beginning, there was only an unlikely pitch. What if Detroit, by 2000 already one of the most depressed, violent, financially challenged cities in the country, gave a free festival in Hart Plaza, the downtown river walk/concrete park, honoring techno music? What if Detroit were filled with people from all over the world on Memorial Day, having the time of their lives, raining serious coin on local merchants throughout the city?
Proving that truth is stranger than fiction, the city bought the idea. Thanks largely to a generous sponsorship package from Ford, which was introducing a new car, the Techno, DEMF (Detroit Electronic Music Festival) was green lit. And techno, which had been invented in Detroit, got its own festival — even though many of the people responsible for the decision had no idea what techno really was.
The amount of videos uploaded to YouTube this year was insane! So far there has been over 30 pages of content uploaded by the fans! Here are a few raw+un-edited videos for you to enjoy. To see all the rest visit YouTube.
Great article + video on Movement 09′ over @ The Lance. Here’s an excerpt >
American Memorial Day weekend took place with a bang. Or more of a constant thumping, really. Office workers in downtown Windsor could hear the pulse coming across the river Monday afternoon. Some Windsor residents in the university area said they could hear the pounding as they lay in bed on the weekend, vainly trying to sleep. No, it wasn’t a rogue construction crew, a metal stamping plant, or even Red Wings fans celebrating Detroit’s slaying of the Chicago Black Hawks Sunday afternoon. It was the ninth annual Detroit Electronic Music Festival taking place in Hart Plaza. And for those in attendance, the constant boom was the rhythmic pounding of the heartbeat of Detroit.
There was a TON of people Twittering @ Movement this year! Crazzzeeee! It was great to see individuals connecting + sharing info + etc. about the festival/parties
